Samuel Taylor Howard
Author: Okakura Kakuzo
Student: Samuel Taylor Howard
Why this book? As beautiful as it is informative, Okakura’s Book of Tea is a survey of Asian art and philosophy. Running the gamut from interior design to flower arrangement, from tea ceremony to architecture, it is a charismatic comparison of ideas of beauty between Eastern and Western sensibilities, and is a great introduction into Asian philosophy (Japanese ideologies in particular). I chose it because it inspired me to pursue new directions in my own art and philosophy.
