Maria Reist
Title: The Art of Travel
Author: Alain De Botton
Student: Maria Reist
Why this book? I read this book for the first time in Dr. Roorda’s travel writing class my freshman year. The lessons that I learned about writing and about the traveling mindset have stayed with me throughout my college career, and have inspired me to seek out and write about my own adventures. I spent a semester abroad my junior year, and I know that my experience was enriched by de Botton’s philosophy of appreciating the exotic, seeking out the sublime, and relishing the everyday. Now that I am in my senior year, this book has become a key source in my capstone project about the interaction between place and writing. I am a wanderer at heart and a lover of travel writing, and this book will always be special to me.
