hungerTitle: Hunger: A Memoir of (my) Body

Author: Roxane Gay

Student: Ellen Dukes

Why this book?  Roxane Gay’s voice as a woman of color, as a Haitian-American, as a fat person, as a writer, and as a ‘bad feminist’ deserves to be in all of our heads. She is unafraid to look at the pain and brutality women inflict upon their bodies as well as the mental and physical toll that can take. Gay talks about eating, weight, fear, strength, and identity the way society has always needed to talk about concerning the female experience. Reading Hunger is not an easy read, but the healing process, while essential, is rarely and easy route to choose.
