Title: Fighting for American Manhood: How Gender Politics Provoked the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars
Author: Kristin L. Hoganson
Student: Kate Byars
Why this book? I read this book for a class and could not put it down. Hoganson explores the relationship between the concept of “manhood” and late 19th century politics in a way that is extremely interesting and readable. I had never taken an in-depth look into the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars before and was shocked by the jingoism that provoked them. The use of gendered language in propaganda by both jingoes and anti-interventionists was also fascinating. Overall, it is a great book and I think every American should read it.
