Why this book?   “One is not born, but rather becomes, woman.” This quote from Beauvoir has dual meanings for my time at the University of Kentucky. On one hand, it represents my core beliefs about how gender is constructed and imposed in society, as well as how this construction has affected women throughout history. I could have cultivated this belief thanks to the education I received as a college student. The scholarly work I have done in gender theory and women in the 20th and 21st centuries reflects these essential beliefs. I am thankful to my professors and my mentors for giving me the opportunity to fully pursue my interests, which have become my life’s passion. On the other hand, Beauvoir’s quote is representative of my journey to becoming my own woman in these four years. Thanks to feminists like Beauvoir, I have been able to make my own choices as a 21st century woman. The people I have chosen to surround myself with, the experiences I have chosen, and the choice to grow from experiences I did not choose to have made me the woman I am today. I am grateful to my family, my partner, my peers, my professors, and my friends for all of their love, guidance, and support. I am grateful, as well, to myself, for having the grace, strength, and determination to finish this journey.
