Title: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Student:  Hayden Arthur

Why this book?  Even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to have read Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting of Hill House”. Hill House is a tale of desperate longing for real connection after a life of quiet desperation. The horror arises not from the perceived ghosts but rather the uncomfortable familiarity of worrying you are the odd one out, and how often that worry becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy – also insane to find such homoerotic tension in a book published in 1959!
