John Crowell
Title: A Confederacy of Dunces
Student: John Crowell
Why this Book? I read this book years ago, and the story always stuck with me. Since high school, A Confederacy of Dunces has been my answer for the inevitable “what’s your favorite book?” question. I guess the thing I love about it is the perfect marriage of ridiculous comedy and heartbreaking tragedy, both because the protagonist is an larger-than-life, frustrated intellectual who is completely incapable of dealing with the world of the 20th century he so vehemently rails against, and because the author committed suicide before the book was published and received so many accolades. Also, the novel reminds me of growing up in the South and all the alternately wonderful and horrible people I met. I suppose that happens no matter where you’re from.
