Why this book? The Zinn Reader contains essays on a number of topics that include civil disobedience, democracy, race, war, economic justice, and history. At times the material is difficult and even painful to get through, but the stories are real and they are important. I hope that my own voice and actions will always express even the tiniest bit of compassion that is shown in this reader for the things that matter now and in the futrue.
