John Osborne

Title: Crime and Punishment

Student: John Osborne

Why this book?  I originally read this book because, in my AP English class, I was given the choice between Crime and Punishment or Pride and Prejudice (for the second time). It was an easy decision, to say the least.  What really struck me about this book was the intense psychologically-driven plot that unfolds almost exclusively in Raskolnikov’s head.  Dostoevsky also spends a great amount of energy in describing the scenery in vivid detail, giving the reader a wonderful sense of space and place within the St. Petersburg setting.  Overall, it’s a masterfully-written novel that really makes you question what justice ultimately is.
